Don't miss the raw, genre-defying sound of Hak Baker
Hak Baker is the East End troubadour whose raw, genre-defying sound has made him one of Britain’s most compelling and respected voices.
Raised on the Isle of Dogs, Hak channels the grit, humour, and contradictions of working-class London into his music, blending folk, reggae, punk, and street-level storytelling into what he calls “G-Folk.” His lyrics move between personal vulnerability, social observation, and political commentary, painting vivid portraits of modern life. Celebrated by peers from Skepta to Fontaines DC, Hak’s unfiltered voice and boundary-pushing style mark him as a singular artist, one whose work resonates with outsiders, rebels, and festival crowds alike.
Part of Hak’s unique sound comes from the depth of his musical interest. His early musical influences came from pirate radio and youth centres. Before picking up the guitar, he was a Grime MC with his group Bomb Squad, who were widely respected during the Channel U era of the genre. He’s cited this time as teaching him how to have charisma, lyrics and the guts in lyricism and of course being able to hold your nerve against someone else.
Then came the guitar. After learning how to play, Haks musical curiosity brought him to the likes of Gil Scott-Heron, Tracy Chapman, and Billy Bragg. This opened the doors for Hak to begin building his debut album, World Wide FM.
Singles such as Doolally have a Streets-esque swagger with nods to disco with a cheeky indie twist. He also leads a rally in ‘Windrush Baby’ and touches on the impact of social media on the world in ‘Telephone 4 Eyes’. He also collaborates with Kurupt FM icon MC Grindah in the skit ‘Babylon Must Fall’.
Since the album Hak has continued to refine his sound. His follow-up EP, Nostalgia Death, featured collaborations with Baxter Dury and his single ‘LUVLY’ came with an epic music video!
Boomtown regulars might have caught Hak Baker before at Revolution of Imagination back in 2024. He was one of the first artists to take to Nexus in Botanica, and he pulled a huge crowd!
