Skrillex: The cultural innovator who redefined dance music
There are probably few names in dance music as well known as Skrillex. Skrillex is a cultural innovator who has redefined live electronic performance. With eight Grammy Awards, the most ever for an electronic artist, he’s headlined arenas, festivals, and surprise pop-ups worldwide. Skrillex’s DJ sets continue to push electronic music into thrilling new territory.
Although he's now one of the most prolific DJ / Producers around the world, Skrillex's early music career was as the singer and guitarist in the rock band "From First to Last". The band released two albums and went on the Vans Warped Tour between 2004 and 2007 before he moved away from the group to pursue his electronic career.
Skrillex’s career is basically a highlight reel of electronic music’s wildest pivots. His breakout solo track “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” (2010) didn’t just introduce a new sound; it rewired the global EDM scene. Suddenly, heavy bass, hyperactive drops, and glitchy chaos were the new normal.
As dubstep fever took over, Skrillex kept pushing boundaries. “Bangarang” (2011) captured the moment when he stopped being the “new guy” and became the guy. It was loud, fun, and totally unbothered by genre rules. He was basically the energy drink of dance music. The industry took notice; Grammys followed; festivals started rearranging their lineups around him.
But Skrillex was never just about stadium bangers. With the Jack Ü project alongside Diplo, he showed his pop instincts. “Where Are Ü Now” (2015), featuring a then-returning Justin Bieber, was the track that proved he could dominate the charts as easily as he dominated clubs. It wasn’t just catchy, it changed the sound of pop for the rest of the decade.
In the years that followed, Skrillex became the producer everyone called when they wanted something bold but razor-sharp. Tracks like “Would You Ever” (2017) showed his softer, breezier side, the sound of an artist comfortable shifting between moods rather than trying to shake the room apart.
And then came 2023: the Skrillex renaissance. With two albums in one weekend, he reintroduced himself yet again. “Rumble” with Fred again.. and Flowdan became the defining track of this new chapter undeniably massive. It was a reminder that even after a decade of influencing everyone else, Skrillex still knows how to flip the whole scene on its head.
Skrillex will be hitting up Boomtown Chapter Five: Radical Redesign and will be one of the DJs playing at the all new HYDRO XL.
