The exciting resurgence of conscious, organic music in Jamaica, dubbed as the “Reggae Revival,” has spread like wildfire over the last five years. Protoje remains at the forefront of this movement. The GRAMMY-nominated artist and philosophical thinker articulates the righteous anger of an emerging generation.
Born Oje Ken Ollivierre in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica to singer Lorna Bennett and a former calypso king Mike Ollivierre of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Protoje blends hip hop, R&B, soul and rock into his native sounds of reggae and dancehall creating a contemporary sound to this rebel music. His catalog thus far consists of four studio albums: Seven Year Itch (2011), The 8 Year Affair (2013), Ancient Future (2015) and A Matter Of Time(2018).
While his debut album Seven Year Itchput him on the map amongst the reggae core with songs like “No Argument” and “Rasta Love” feat. Ky-Mani Marley, he gained wider recognition on his second album The 8 Year Affair. The album spawned the popular single “Kingston Be Wise” that was selected for Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V’s soundtrack. However, it was his landmark album Ancient Future that signaled the advent of a fresh reinvention for reggae as a whole. The album, produced by Winta James, soared to the top of the U.S. Billboard Reggae Album chart during its first week. The album featured his international mega hit “Who Knows” feat. Chronixx,” which has amassed over 125 million views on YouTube for its video alone.
